Heart of Imperial Beijing

The Forbidden City covers an area of 72 hectares, with more than 980 surviving buildings arranged symmetrically along a north-south axis. Surrounded by a moat and 10-meter-high walls, it served as both a residence and a political and ceremonial center. The complex is divided into the Outer Court for state ceremonies and the Inner Court for the imperial family's private life. In 1987, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Reviving Heritage Through Immersive Storytelling

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Forbidden City attracts millions of visitors each year — yet space, time, and conservation constraints make it impossible for any single visitor to absorb its full historical depth. Traditional immersive tours rarely go beyond visual display, with limited multi-modal context and fragmented data management.

Since 2015, the Palace Museum has accumulated a vast library of panoramic imagery and multi-modal data. In 2023, with funding from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's National Key R&D Program, we launched the project "Multi-modal Data Value Mining Based on Panoramic Imagery for Immersive Cultural Heritage Tourism". After three years of fieldwork, data integration, and technical development, the Forbidden City Central Axis was selected as the pilot area — covering four core regions: Outer Southern Gate, Outer Court, Inner Court, and the Imperial Garden.
